Background of the Study
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a major public health concern among pregnant women, particularly in low-resource settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends daily iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) during pregnancy to prevent maternal anemia, reduce the risk of preterm birth, and support fetal development. However, adherence to iron supplementation remains suboptimal in many parts of Nigeria, including Gombe State, where maternal anemia rates are high.
Several factors contribute to poor compliance with iron supplementation, including gastrointestinal side effects, misconceptions about iron tablets, inadequate healthcare access, and forgetfulness. Additionally, socio-cultural beliefs and financial constraints limit the consistent use of iron supplements. While antenatal clinics provide iron supplements to expectant mothers, the extent to which these women adhere to recommended dosages remains unclear. This study investigates the compliance levels of iron supplementation among pregnant women in Gombe State and explores the barriers to adherence.
Statement of the Problem
Iron deficiency is a leading cause of maternal anemia, which increases the risk of pregnancy complications, including low birth weight and maternal mortality. Despite the availability of iron supplements through antenatal care programs, many pregnant women in Gombe State fail to adhere to the recommended dosage. Factors such as poor awareness, side effects, and limited healthcare accessibility hinder compliance. There is a need for empirical research to assess the level of iron supplementation compliance among expectant mothers and identify strategies to improve adherence.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the compliance level of iron supplementation among pregnant women in Gombe State.
To identify factors influencing iron supplementation adherence.
To recommend strategies for improving compliance with iron supplementation.
Research Questions
What is the level of iron supplementation compliance among expectant mothers in Gombe State?
What factors influence adherence to iron supplementation?
What interventions can enhance compliance with iron supplementation?
Research Hypotheses
Poor adherence to iron supplementation is associated with high maternal anemia rates.
Socioeconomic factors significantly affect iron supplementation compliance.
Increased awareness and antenatal education improve iron supplementation adherence.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on pregnant women in Gombe State who receive iron supplements as part of antenatal care. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and variations in healthcare access across different communities.
